Brian Cashman and the Yankees made the decision today not to offer arbitration to any of the potential free agents.
The players not offered arbitration are Type A Johnny Damon, Type B's Xavier Nady and Andy Pettitte, along with ratingless Eric Hinske, Jerry Hairston, Jr., Hideki Matsui and Jose Molina.
By not offering anyone arbitration, the Yankees will not be receiving any compensation draft picks if any of these guys go elsewhere.
Damon was not offered arbitration because he would likely receive a significant raise. Nady would have probably received around $8-$9 million dollars through arbitration. Way to much for a guy coming off of Tommy John Surgery who is no guarantee to be healthy or effective. Andy Pettitte easily would have accepted and received a sizable raise as well, so the Yankees are saving a few million dollars here by rejecting arbitration; but expect Pettitte to eventually re-sign, unless a sudden retirement.
