Mitre Likely to Join the Rotaton

Obviously the signing on Sergio Mitre did not get as much press as those to acquire Teixeira, Burnett, and Sabathia, but this seemingly minor signing at the time might end up to be an huge lift.

Mitre, 28, pitched an absolute gem tonight for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Mitre threw eight brilliant shutout innings against Buffalo. He allowed only six hits and didn't walk a batter, while striking out five in the effort. Furthermore, it only took him 82 pitches and had an absolutely insane 15-4 groundout to flyout ratio. That is vintage Chien-Ming Wangesque right there.

With the bullpen struggling a bit lately, and the fact that Alfredo Aceves is not fully extended to pitch a lengthy game, it seems very likely that Mitre will get his next start, with Aceves going back to the bullpen, being a continuing to be a brick wall.

Velocity-wise, Chad Jennings says that Mitre was sitting 91-92 mph.

Peter Abraham spectulated regarding this as well:

You can bet he’ll be in the rotation as the fifth guy. That will allow them to use Aceves in the bullpen. Girardi said they needed to talk about it over the break but Mitre had to have impressed today.
