Meacham, Monteleone Fired

Peter Abraham reports that the New York Yankees had decided not to renew the contract of of third-base coach Bobby Meachum, along with special pitching instructor Rich Monteleone. He had pre-game duties and charted pitches for the team but was never actually in uniform.

Anyone who watched a majority of the games this year could see the Meachum firing coming. He clearly either a) had awful judgement when waving in runners b) didn't do his homework or c) all of the above.

So who takes over at third-base? Fan favorite Luis Sojo might have the upperhand here; he is the manager of the Yankees' Class-A Tampa Yankees and and has a coach in the Yankees in the past - but he did get fired from the job.

Some other candidates off of the top of my head? I would imagine it would be an ex-player who wants to be a manager or a minor league guy. Maybe Alvaro Espinosa? He's a coach for Triple-A and an ex-Yankee.

But then again, maybe they would want a Larry Bowa-type guy to get on Cano. (I don't think that they can get Bowa himself away from LA.) I would also think they would want someone that is still in baseball in some way.

Any thoughts on who they could pick?

Larry Bowa would be my choice as well. It's important that Cano gets a foot up his butt every once in a while and he respected Bowa. Someone like him would be ideal.

I read someplace today that Willie Randolph was being considered. The @b connection with Cano could be a factor since Bowa is not available. It doesn't appear that Girardi will have much say since his guy jusy got canned.
