By the way, that quote was mine. No, of course I have not given up on him. He is still only 22, and despite throwing a ridiculous amount of pitches and getting a lot of foul balls, he gave up only one run in four innings, with only four hits allowed. He'll likely get two more starts this year, so hopefully he can fix his control, which despite allowing only two walks, was pretty off. It is so stupid for people to give up on him.
He should not be untouchable though. If the Yankees can pick up a very young productive, cheap hitter or two for him, I'd have to consider it. (Cough) Chris Davis. Max Ramirez (cough)
Just consider this: Say the Yankees are able to get together a deal with Texas. They give up Phil Hughes, Edwar Ramirez, and another good starting pitching prospect (Betances? McAllister?) in exchange for Max Ramirez (or another one of the Rangers' catchers except for Laird) and Chris Davis. (Note: I have no idea regarding trade value as I am not a G.M.) If they can pull off some sort of blockbuster deal, they would now have a catcher and first baseman that are cheap and cost controlled. Then I would suggest something like this:
C-Posada/Ramirez
DH-Posada/Ramirez
1B-Davis
2B-Cano
SS-Jeter
3B-Rodriguez
LF-Damon
CF-Gardner or Jackson
RF-Nady
Notice that Matsui is not in these plans? Well Matsui is easily tradeable. He has only one year left in his deal and is relatively affordable. They can then take Matsui and make up some of the prospect value they lost in the Ranger trade.
What do I do for the rotation? Get C.C. and re-sign Moose, and that is it.

you don't trade a young pitcher when this team has no pitching depth, he got good stuff,he threw strikes, all those foul balls are are a fluke. how many starts have rasner and ponson made this year, 35 plus, you gotta have depth, if hughes isn't ready send him to triple a to start the season.
I gotta disagree. If they could get a catcher for 6 years and a 1B for 6 years, have the flexibility to trade Matsui and his contract, gain some prospects back from the Matsui deal, gain the ability to let Posada spend time away from catcher, gain the ability to let Giambi walk, AND gain the ability to not have to sign Texiera, all for Hughes and some other prospects and a reliever, I have to do it.
Let's have a hypothetical rotation of CC-Moose-Chamberlain-Wang and a cage match between let's say: Kennedy, Marquez, Aceves, Milton, and some dark horses.
Then the Yankees should have a AAA rotation of something like:
3 of Milton, Kennedy, Marquez, and Aceves
George Kontos
Chase Wright
And I guess you have Alan Horne on the DL until he's back and Dan Giese probably as the major league long man/spot starter.
that a solid rotation, but is risky for 2 reason, joba as a starter is still unproven despite his 2.60 era " small sample size. second can moose have around season like this, he had a good season in 06, but then was awful in 07. posada has 3 years left on the deal he pretty much took the year off, he should be able to catch 2 years. matsui 1 year 13 million. mark t shouldn't be an automatic, but he could help. you could trade hideki and bring back abreu as a dh on a year deal. unless i get a young and proven mlb pitcher, hughes shouldn't be trade, gotta have depth. your site very good.
How is a guy like Matsui who has a full no trade clause and is having surgery today easy to trade? Think that through. Are many teams going to be willing to give up a lot for an aging guy who they'll have to bribe to get him to waive his ntc? I don't think so.
